Lisbon: A moment of joy and expectation towards the 50th Anniversary of the Shrine

Mafalda Pedra Soares

In Portugal, the Schoenstatt Shrine in Lisbon, Cenacle of the Father’s Family, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its completion and blessing.

The Jubilee Year began on September 15, 2023, with the proclamation of plenary indulgences granted by Pope Francis for those who visit the Shrine and the opening of the Shrine’s Holy Door.

On the way to the Jubilee, the Schoenstatt Family responded to Father Joseph Kentenich’s call and renewed its YES to the Blessed Mother, a YES that the Founding Generation offered on September 15, 1974, affirming itself as the “Cenacle of the Father’s Family”. The Lisbon Family is living this pastoral year with its eyes fixed on the Shrine and, for this reason, several activities have been carried out within the framework of the motto for the Jubilee Year: “Faithful to the origin, Cenacle of the Father’s Family”.

Final preparations

Now everyone is concentrating with great joy on the coming weeks of September, which will culminate with the Jubilee Festival on the 14th and 15th. It will be a combination of celebration with family and friends, united with spirituality in the shadow of the Shrine.

The Jubilee Festival will begin on the afternoon of September 14th in the public square and garden next to the Schoenstatt Shrine.

The atmosphere will be reminiscent of traditional Lisbon festivities, with entertainment, music, food and drink stalls and the formal representation of the various branches of the Movement. The desire of the organization is to make known, in a testimonial way, the richness of the spiritual path that the Schoenstatt Movement offers to everyone and to the Church.

Invitation to all

The Shrine will be open for prayer and moments of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

In the “Shelter”, which is a modern structure next to the Shrine, where Masses and Family events will be celebrated, talks will take place and the Jubilee Exposition will be inaugurated, with the works of art made by the children during the pastoral year.

The morning of September 15th will begin with the solemn Jubilee Mass, which will be attended by representatives of the diocesan Church, Schoenstatt Fathers from different parts of the world, representatives of various Movements, local civil authorities and, of course, the national Schoenstatt Family from the Shrines of Aveiro, Porto, Braga as well as pilgrims from other regions. A get-together lunch will follow.

The Schoenstatt Family of Lisbon invites everyone to participate in these days of grace. Celebrate with us this significant Jubilee of the Lisbon Shrine, the first Shrine erected in Portugal. All are welcome!

We will have many festive activities as we express our feelings of deep gratitude to Our Blessed Mother for her presence in the Shrine throughout these 50 years and for the many graces she has showered upon us.
