For three years, the Munich Schoenstatt Family worked on creating a green space with trees and plants all around the Shrine. The aim was not only to make the place more beautiful and welcoming, but also to contribute to the environment. Today, the Shrine is an oasis in the middle of the big city. This led the Munich City Planning Department to include the Shrine in the Urban Land-Art Tour project.

Final stop of the Urban Land-Art Tour

For many of the participants it was quite a discovery to enter the grounds of the Munich Schoenstatt Center from the crowded Herterich Street: “Standing at the edge of a sea of houses, such a green and quiet place!” exclaimed one of the participants in amazement.

Our park was the final stop of the Urban Land-Art-Tur organized by the City of Munich’s Department of Urban Planning. The aim of this offer with various events is to show interested parties the importance of the green corridor. At a time when many square meters of nature are being lost every day, the preservation and maintenance of near-natural spaces in cities is of great importance.

Preserving creation

When the Department of Urban Planning asked in the Spring if it would be possible to hold the half-day event on the grounds of the Munich Schoenstatt Center, the “host”, Father Frank Riedel, Schoenstatt Institute, willingly and spontaneously agreed. After all, the remodeling of the grounds surrounding the Schoenstatt Chapel over the past 3 years had also been done because the community wanted to make its small contribution to the preservation of creation.

Under the motto “Experience art and nature as one”, the Department of City Planning had invited the participants. Under the guidance of an art educator, objects were created from natural materials at various stations and documented photographically. In the end, these photos were displayed in an improvised “exhibition”. In addition, the participants created small “mementos” from flowers, grasses and branches.

The attendees visited the Schoenstatt Center for the first time. Through this event they got to know our grounds and the Shrine of Grace. It was thus possible to address people on this July afternoon who would never have known Schoenstatt had it not been for this event.
