More than 80 young people, one week, one project. Yes, a week in which not only is a stage set up, but a festival: the Night of the Shrine. This year’s theme is Unique… Now Real? “In a world full of fake news, edited images, AI videos, and social expectations… what makes me unique—and what is real?”
Shrine Night is a Catholic festival organized by the Schoenstatt Youth of Germany in Schoenstatt, centered around the Original Shrine… It is more than just a festival; it is an experience that inspires, unites, and rekindles faith—a festival by young people for young people. In 2005, World Youth Day was held in Cologne, and prior to that, an international gathering was organized to take advantage of the fact that many young people from different countries would be coming to Germany and passing through Schoenstatt. Hearts were set ablaze, and the following year a new festival was held… year after year, the project grew until it took shape and was named Night of the Shrine.
The festival itself takes place over a weekend, but as early as the previous week—VOLUNTEER WEEK—several young people come together, organized into different teams — Central Team, Band (music), Creative Design, Administration, Logistics, PR (Communication), Finance, Program, Liturgy, Technical, Volunteers, and Purchasing — they prepare for the festival, which is expected to draw more than 250 young people between the ages of 16 and 30.
From setting up the stage and tents, running cables for audio consoles and lights, filming and editing clips, writing posts and articles, rehearsing songs, testing the band’s instruments, building the set design and decorations, purchasing, managing registrations and donations, coordinating with lodging providers, organizing times of prayer, and arranging meals and the weekend’s program—including workshops, reflections, talks, a theater night, talent shows, and music—culminating in the Covenant Night, when the Covenant of Love is renewed around the Shrine… it’s a tremendous team effort.
Yes, but it’s not all work—there’s also laughter, celebration, and reunions with old friends. At the end of the week, you look back with satisfaction and admiration at what we’ve experienced and built together.
