As a member of the <strong>Federation of Schoenstatt Priests<\/strong>, he served as a <em>Fidei Donum <\/em>priest in the African mission since 1978. For decades, he accompanied, encouraged, and brought people together in<strong> Chad and Cameroon<\/strong>. His work combined pastoral care with practical assistance, faith with education, and spirituality with a commitment to dignified living conditions. Until the very end, he devoted himself to the shrine \u201cOur Lady, Queen of the Apostles\u201d and the adjacent educational and community center in Marza, in the Diocese of Ngaound\u00e9r\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En septiembre de 2026, el <strong>Padre Alois Baumberger<\/strong> parti\u00f3 al Padre eterno en el hospital de Douala, Camer\u00fan. He grew up with his five siblings on his parents\u2019 farm in Loh, Bichelsee-Balterswil, Switzerland, where his parents, Franz and Anna Baumberger-Schicker, lived. As the eldest son, he initially worked in agriculture and later earned a degree in agronomy. However, his \u201ceye for the distant horizon,\u201d as he would later say, led him to leave his family home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through adult education, he earned his high school diploma, entered the Schoenstatt Fathers\u2019 community by beginning his novitiate, studied theology in M\u00fcnster, and later joined the Federation of Schoenstatt Priests, where he made his perpetual consecration in 1988. Even as a young man, he often traveled through countries of the former Eastern Bloc. On June 15, 1975, he was ordained a priest in Solothurn. After three years as a chaplain in Sirnach, he left for Africa in 1978 as a priest in the <em>Fidei Donum<\/em> program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/schoenstatt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/pe-bracht-antonio-Alois-Baumberger.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72843\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Father Alois Baumberger (right) at the Original Shrine in 2018, sending images of the Pilgrim Mother to visit families in Cameroon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hatamba-someone-who-gets-down-to-work-with-energy\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHatamba,\u201d someone who gets down to work with energy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His path led him to the Diocese of Pala in southern Chad. There, he led the large parish of Gounou Gan, which encompassed five parish communities and a territory the size of the canton of St. Gallen. For 22 years, he served as a priest and development worker. The Musseye ethnic group called him, with admiration, <em>\u201cHatamba\u201d<\/em>: someone who gets to work with vigor. He founded parish communities, built churches with local people, a clinic, and a cultural center; he had wells drilled, established a catechetical center, and supported local priests. More than ten of them later joined the Schoenstatt Federation of Priests; today they work in parishes, at the seminary, and in theological education. One of them later became a bishop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Alois Baumberger, preaching and development were inextricably linked. Faith was not meant to distance people from the world but to strengthen them so they could work together to improve their living conditions. In 2000, at nearly 60 years of age, he started anew and took charge of the parish of Djouman, on the banks of the Logone River, which was facing difficult circumstances. Coexistence among different ethnic groups, as well as the relationship between Christians, Muslims, and followers of traditional religions, was marked by tensions at the time. Thanks to him, the community came together again, and, among other projects, a school was established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schoenstatt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/WhatsApp-Image-2022-01-14-at-17.00.27-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In 2022, the 45th Episcopal Conference of Cameroon visited the National Pilgrimage Center and wanted Father Alois to give them spiritual and historical information about the place.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-faith-that-respected-the-people-s-culture\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">A Faith That Respected the People\u2019s Culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alois Baumberger was a missionary in body and soul.<\/strong> He learned the language of the Mousseye, among whom he lived, and took an interest in their rites and customs. For him, inculturation was not a theoretical slogan but a daily practice. While other missionaries wanted to ban drums from religious services, he encouraged the drummers to play in praise of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a Paschal candle brought from Europe melted quickly in the heat, he met with the elders. Together, they rediscovered a flammable resin used in the past. In clay bowls, the resin became a light with which, from then on, the newly baptized danced during the Easter Mass. In this way, the Gospel found expression in the people\u2019s culture rather than imposing something foreign upon them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoenstatt.de\/images\/news\/2026\/09\/20260926NachrufAloisBaumberger_Djouman_G25-Image055.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A missionary who gets his hands dirty (Photo: private)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-modest-energetic-and-tireless\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Modest, Energetic, and Tireless<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His fellow travelers remember him as an open, modest, and unusually energetic priest. With deep respect for African culture, he proclaimed Jesus as the one who draws near to the poor, the marginalized, and the sick. He lived simply and, with a passionate heart, devoted himself to people\u2019s physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it meant hauling cow manure, procuring building materials, digging wells, celebrating Mass, or hearing confessions, Alois rolled up his sleeves and got to work. Discreetly, perseveringly, and tirelessly, he organized whatever was needed. His motto was: <em>\u201cNothing is impossible; there is a solution for everything.\u201d<\/em> He championed education, local responsibility, and dialogue, as well as savings and credit groups, preventive health care, support for women, and schools for children from poor families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-lifelong-mission-that-continued-to-grow\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">A lifelong mission that continued to grow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even in his final years, Alois Baumberger remained a priest of renewal. In 2010, he undertook the monumental task in Cameroon of building the \u201cNotre-Dame des Ap\u00f4tres\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/schoenstatt.com\/es\/un-sacerdote-de-schoenstatt-suizo-construye-un-santuario-nacional-en-camerun\/\">national pilgrimage center in Marza<\/a>. He devoted himself to the center\u2019s physical and spiritual expansion for encounters, education, and pilgrimage, as well as to the construction of a church for pilgrims. He sought to instill his approach\u2014shaped by Schoenstatt spirituality\u2014into local culture and the daily lives of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As recently as August 2026, he reported further progress: with support from friends in Cameroon, Germany, and Switzerland, fish ponds were built, construction of the pilgrimage chapel continued, and the houses surrounding the Guest and Training House were renovated. Faced with poverty, political instability, and ecological crises, he sought paths beyond mere complaint or resignation. For him, compassion was decisive: compassion for those who suffer and concrete collaboration toward a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastor Alois Baumberger leaves his mark on churches and schools, wells and health centers, communities, and the hearts of many people.
